The Durham Alliance league was established in 1996. The league was originally formed as the Washington Amateur League on April 4th 1932 by a group of local business men. The League officials elected at the meeting were Chairman Mr.G.Potts, Secretary Mr.J.Whitfield and the president the reverend C.Lomax. 15 clubs formed the league and they were Washington Church Institute, Washington St.Andrews, Washington P.M, Washington St.Josephs, Washington Colliery Welfare, Washington Weslyan, Havannah Mission, North Biddick, Woodside Rovers, Springwell Village, Herrington Gym, Washington Chemiclas, Eighton Banks, Washington Staithes Welfare and Washington Brotherhood

The league was suspended during the war years and re-formed in 1949 with Clem Smith being appointed as Secretary, a position he held until he retired in 1982 at the age of 76.

The League has progressed over the years and from being mainly composed of clubs from the Washington area it now embraces the whole of County Durham and parts of Northumberland and Cleveland.
